Round Review – Round 11

Another round of carnage, with many late outs and injuries leading into the bye rounds. Also, the individual Fantasy score record for 2019 has been broken, again by a GWS player! This will be a shorter review as I was unable to watch most games over the weekend.

The round kicked off with a huge upset, with North Melbourne smashing the Tigers after their coach, Brad Scott, was sacked earlier in the week. What a courageous outing from the Kangaroos.

The nominated Players of the Round were:

Stephen Coniglio (GWS)

Tom Lynch (ADEL)

Jack Darling (WCE)

Travis Boak (PORT)

All four played some great footy, but Coniglio delivered the best individual performance of the year against the Suns. He just edged out Whitfield’s 190 from a few weeks back, finishing with 3 goals, 36 disposals (including 29 kicks), 13 marks, 8 tackles and 192 Fantasy points. Simply superb! Although I am a little disappointed as I traded him out a couple of weeks back. Well done if you had him!

I also ran another Twitter poll last week in regard to the all-around best player (in terms of Fantasy) in May. As you can see in the embedded Tweet above, Grundy was the clear winner as he should be. However, the other three have also been phenomenal!

Now we prepare for the bye rounds… I personally turned them off in my league this season as I hate the additional stress especially since it’s around the same time as mid-year exams. Regardless, I’ll still be doing trades and analysing the inevitable carnage, so head on over to the Team Discussion page if you want to see my current team and discuss your own.

Round Review – Round 10

An exciting round of footy, with several top 8 teams in close games and many outstanding individual performances! The 2019 Indigenous Round kicked off with a thriller between Sydney and Collingwood at the SCG.

Brodie Grundy was again phenomenal, finishing on a Fantasy score of 149 and elevating his 3-Game Average to a crazy 150.0!

Despite Grundy’s great feat, he still couldn’t break into the AFL’s top four Players of the Round, which consisted of:

Bachar Houli (RICH)

Jack Gunston (HAW)

Todd Goldstein (NM)

Sam Reid (SYD)

You’d expect all four of the nominated players would have had to play sensational matches to beat Grundy into the top four Players of the Round, and they did! Gunston was back in his All-Australian form from 2018 with 6 goals straight, 21 disposals, 9 marks and 133 Fantasy points. Goldstein was also back to his best with 28 disposals, 7 marks, 57 hitouts and an extraordinary 153 Fantasy points. Sam Reid nearly got the Swans over the line against one of the best sides in the competition, also kicking 6 goals straight and accumulating 15 disposals, 9 marks and 125 Fantasy points.

I left Bachar Houli until last as I personally believe he was the best player of the round. He managed 37 disposals, 28 of which were kicks, 6 marks, 5 tackles, nearly 814 metres gained and 144 Fantasy points. I also chose Houli because he has been in fantastic form and is also my pick for the player that is most likely to carry form into the next round. He has tonned in 4 out of his last 5 matches, which is a great accomplishment.

Players of the Round – Round 9

With so many phenomenal performances each week, I’ve decided to start creating Player Cards for each nominee. From now on there will be four new Player Cards each week, starting with the best overall Player of the Round, and this week that is undoubtedly…

Lachie Whitfield had the best individual performance of the year thus far! Check out my Round 9 Review for more on that.

Apologies for the use of the old design. These were some old ones I had made already! Here are your other nominees:

Round Review – Round 9

We have a lot to talk about this week! Ranging from how a few post-round talking points resulted, the surprise retiring of a club star, the results of my first Twitter poll and the highest individual Fantasy score so far in 2019! Let’s start with the post-round talking points, which you may have seen over on Twitter earlier this week.

I ended up trading in Gaff and Dunkley, while holding Walsh. Happy with Gaff’s score (126) however Dunkley (77) and Walsh (76) could’ve been better. Hoping they bounce back next week! My decision to bring in Gaff was partially based on the results of my first poll that I ran on Twitter this week.

I’m happy with the engagements of this tweet, 30 votes isn’t too bad for a first poll on a relatively new account! And the voters got it quite right! I now know that my best chance at connecting with my target audience is via Twitter.

The biggest talking point after Round 9 is the absolutely superb performance of Lachie Whitfield, who scored a phenomenal 190 Fantasy points! Before we talk more about Whitfield’s perfect game, let’s list the AFL’s nominees for Player of the Round:

Mitch Duncan (GEEL)

Brodie Grundy (COLL)

Dustin Martin (RICH)

Lachie Whitfield (GWS)

The overall best player in Round 9 was without a doubt Lachie Whitfield, but that’s not to take away from the other nominees. Their performances would all be worthy of being the best if it weren’t for Whitfield! Duncan and Grundy have been superb all year round, and both I would highly recommend being in your side. Dusty also had what may be his first performance of the year that matches his 2017 Brownlow form.

Now let’s talk about Whitfield’s game. 40 disposals, 18 marks, 3 goals, and 190 Fantasy points. That, to me, is beyond a perfect individual game of football. The fact that it was against the current weakest side in the competition (Carlton) and that it was also a 93 point win should not take away from how incredible this was for an individual performance. I should also mention that this was his first game back after being off two weeks with an injury! I decided to hold him over this period and it is one of the best decisions I have ever made in AFL Fantasy.

Despite Whitfield’s 190 this week, I still think Grundy or Duncan will be most likely to carry their form into next week. The Giants just have too many players who can take over a game, next week it may be Coniglio, Taranto, Cameron, Kelly, Greene… the list goes on and on. Grundy and Duncan have both almost tonned in each of their last 4 matches, Grundy finishing on 99 in Round 7. They’re currently the two form players of the competition, although Whitfield is likely to join them. If I had to pick one though it would be Grundy, who is up against the Callum Sinclair and the Swans next week. The Swans have given up very high scores to rucks so far this year, and I will personally be keeping the Captaincy on Grundy for the foreseeable future.

Amongst all the excitement this week in the Fantasy community, there was some sad news coming out of the Western Bulldogs. Tom Boyd retires at the age of 23, who will forever be hailed as a premiership hero at the Dogs and a near Norm Smith medalist. All the best Tom in your future endeavours, and congratulations on a great career.

Round Review – Round 8

There were quite a few close matches in Round 8. 6/9 decided by 20 or less points, and 2 decided by less than a goal! Surprisingly, the largest winning margin was from the Hawks against Top 4 favourites GWS, with the Hawks coming off a very disappointing loss to Melbourne. I may be biased as a Hawthorn supporter, but what a game that was from the Hawks to show they won’t be giving up easily in 2019!

I did not have much time to post Twitter updates this weekend, and for that I apologise. Anyway, the nominated Players of the Round are:

Patrick Cripps (CARL)

Tim Kelly (GEEL)

Alex Keath (ADEL)

Clayton Oliver (MELB)

Again, this may be biased, but I’m a little disappointed with the AFL for not nominating Ricky Henderson at all this season. He was a clear BOG for the Hawks in their big win against GWS, and he has been their best player overall all season.

Regardless, the four nominated players all played fantastic games aswell. I would love to choose Tim Kelly as the best of the four, as he once again proves he is already a superstar of the competition, but Clayton Oliver was the clear best player of the round. Oliver had 38 disposals, 5 marks, an insane 15 tackles and a whopping 161 Fantasy points. Despite not scoring in the 1 point win against the Suns, Oliver was the difference in getting the Dees over the line.

As for who is most likely to carry their form into next round, I’ll go with Tim Kelly who has been outstanding this year. He has racked up an average of 105.5 Fantasy points, which could be even higher if it weren’t for him being tagged by De Boer (the current best tagger in the league) in round 4.

Round Review – Round 7

I’ll let this Tweet do the talking. Safe to say I was not very happy with how this week went in terms of Fantasy, and my team (Hawthorn) also lost so there’s that too.

Regardless, we’ve got a round of footy to review, and the nominated Players of the Round are:

Aaron Naughton (WB)

Jeremy Cameron (GWS)

Scott Pendlebury (COLL)

Dayne Zorko (BRIS)

Pendlebury (126) again retains his spot in the Players of the Round, however this week I think I’m going to have to say Aaron Naughton had the best overall performance from the nominated players. A whopping 5.3 bag, 16 disposals, 14 incredible marks and 125 Fantasy points… Naughton is quickly developing into one of the next superstars of the competition!

I’m undoubtedly going to pick Pendlebury as the player most likely to carry their form into the next round, as he has been in some cracking form in the past few weeks. Keep an eye on him, he could be a good unique option for your midfield!

I also just want to note that I personally think the best player this round was Elliot Yeo, who scored 146 points from a goal, 28 disposals, 7 marks and 12 tackles in what can be described as a near perfect game for a midfielder. However, the AFL surprisingly overlooked him in the nominations!
